On October 28th, C4K’s Clubhouse was buzzing with laughter, camaraderie, and heartfelt conversations as our fall cohort members and mentors gathered for a memorable Community Building Night. This event, a cornerstone of our programming, brings together youth, mentors, and C4K staff to explore and celebrate the supportive networks that uplift our members, helping them recognize how they’re surrounded by people who care about their success.
Highlights from the Evening
The theme of the night was “Web of Support,” an idea brought to life through hands-on activities that encouraged reflection on the role of friends, family, mentors, and teachers. One of the activities had participants gather in a circle, passing a ball of yarn to one another while sharing examples of people who support them. With each new connection, the yarn web grew stronger, finally becoming robust enough to hold up a beach ball—an empowering visual of how a network of support can bear life’s challenges.
Youth members also created posters showcasing their personal web of support, writing down the names of friends, family members, and other adults who play meaningful roles in their lives. Each member then described their web on video, capturing personal reflections on how these individuals inspire them to pursue their goals and aspirations.
Why Community Building Matters
At C4K, we believe in the power of community to nurture resilience, confidence, and social capital—the network of relationships that can open doors and create opportunities. Social capital is particularly essential for the youth we work with, as they often lack access to the networks that others may take for granted. By understanding and building their own web of connections, our members gain invaluable resources: people who can advocate for them, share knowledge, and offer guidance as they navigate school and career pathways.
This was our largest Community Building Night yet, and it clearly demonstrated our commitment to ensuring that every member knows they’re supported by a network that believes in their future.
